clean slate

Hello mysterions,

It’s my birthday month and I’m returning to my starting position, ready for another lap around the sun. The project to rebuild the Cardinal is all but finished -or rather they’re all but finished utilizing me- and Natt Spil continues to eek a little closer to done as well (although there’s always a nasty surprise with that sound system, the place itself is just too cozy and inviting to be a pain), bringing CircuitWorks the repair and audio engineering service nearer to idle. This is something I could not really be more pleased with, as it seems the last couple of years have spread me pretty thin, and I’m losing track of the core mission: music.

That said, this Friday marks the kick off of my next adventure. I’ve been barely riding the wave lately, managing to slide in under the wire with a diving catch for virtually every project I’ve undertaken -part of the reason I need to shed some excess weight. My good friend has expanded his reach and opened a rather nice little cafĂ© and lounge right on the aorta of Madison nightlife; State Street. While I was always somewhat against the whole restaurant turned nightclub after dark, it’s becoming pretty much my only option since the tired and timid mindset of this small town seems perfectly happy to suffocate the music scene on it’s own ego driven apathy. So, my good friends, I present to you my latest brainchild:

fresh equation

It’s back to the old grind of humping my own sound and busting ass trying to promote a place that from the street actually seems to fade from view when you are looking directly at it, but it’s also a place that I am given freedom to be creative, an honest listen, and even a little faith. That counts more to me than pretty much anything else in this shady, superficial business and so I’m happy to work a little harder to see it succeed.

I’m also currently still hosting the bastard child of nights: 86′ed! at the Cardinal. It’s been a painful start, largely due to the Monday night time slot and my subsequent hesitation to put my heart into it. Fortunately my name is barely even on it, so if I do walk away from it there won’t be much of a difference. The specials are quite amazing however, and it’s a chance to experiment musically, so I’m undecided as to whether or not I want to smother it to death or give it a chance to live and grow. It is a Monday night, after all, and I’m not giving up the day job for this bullshit.

So that’s all I got. Keep your hands in the air and your feet on the ground, and I’ll see you on the dance floor.
