Hey cool cats, sorry I’ve been away for so long. It pains me too. Obviously I haven’t done a show since the iQ collaboration, and talked myself into taking time off. I’m still letting the bookings trickle in, but I won’t be hosting for a while.
If you do need to hear my sweet musical stylings (don’t be ashamed to need it;) I have been putting more focus on my monthly Thursday night at Natt Spil. I’ve taken to calling it Mentality, as it pulls more in the downtempo and nu jazz direction, with a glimmer of electronica and deep house during the late hours. The next show happens on Thursday, August 20th. Quite a lot of fun actually, as it’s all stuff I love and don’t get to play when rocking a dance floor. Which I miss more than many things right now.
Fortunately I’ll have a brief chance to get close to that again, when I play for Thirsty at the new Area 51 bar off of Pflaum at Stoughton Rd. Don’t be fooled by the cobbled website from the mid-nineties, featuring all the stock “martini lounge” images they could html onto the page, the place is pure-bred Wisconsin dive bar. I kind of prefer it that way, given it’s location. From the cheap wood paneling and grammatically incorrect signage to the video poker and zombified regulars to the eagerly friendly owner with a drunken mean streak the place pretty much has everything you’d expect, and little you’d hope for. The sort of place where they don’t ask too many questions when a bunch of kids come in to spend their money, and all they want to do is play some crazy electronic music. Come and live on the edge for another Thursday show, August 27th. Head over to the Honey Pot Crew website for details, as the full lineup hasn’t been announced (at least to me) yet.
That said, I’m looking very much to the developments in Madison nightlife, as I’m putting the finishing touches on the new Natt Spil sound system upgrades and beginning talks for the design to herald the triumphant return of the beloved Cardinal Bar this fall. This whole sound system installation business is picking up steam, and it’s tons of fun. I love nothing more than helping to build the Madison music scene, and it’s great to play a part in the wonderful things happening. See you on the (new) dance floors!
